Today was my colour day. I decided to finish up my acrylic seascape. I had been putting it off a little as it had gone quite well up until now and I knew the next section would involve painting rocks on with a pallet knife. I've never painted with a knife before.
When I first began applying the paint I could only laugh. It looked awful! I had taken a rather nice little seascape and now there were big dark smudges on it. Having decided it was a lost cause anyway I relaxed into it and just kept painting. After a while it began to look a little better and was getting a nice 3D effect.
Then I realised I was supposed to add another wave and more tide water. There was also more spray and lots of shadowing and reflection. It sounded daunting, but I mixed the colours and started work. I tweaked things to more suit me and what I done thus far. Keeping in mind my colours weren't quite the same as theirs I had extra mixing to do. As I worked with knife, brushes, fingertips and toilet roll (really), it began to come together. The author uses a method for their seafoam that wouldn't work for me. I gave up and just started doing my own thing and it came together!
I can see lots of whoopsies in it, but overall I am quite pleased with it. The sand strokes should be moving towards a vanishing point to create depth of field. The seafoam patterns should look more horizontally compressed as they go further back, etc. Still, I like my colours, finally worked out how to use glazes, layering paint and I'd do it again!
The end result is on my coursework page. :)
